Tarantino's Pulp Fiction
73
Released in 1994, Quentin Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' has become one of the most influential movies of it's time. This outstanding ‘Crime/Thriller’ has won over 40 awards including an Oscar. Arguably Tarantino’s best film, became a major success using the same formula as his others, and also has points in common with his other movies. The film itself is based around several subjects and includes several plots intertwining, eventually to all link together in some way or another (similar structure in Inglorious Basterds). The way that Quentin frames certain shots, uses a certain piece of music, or a certain storyline could make his films recognisable in an instant. Tarantino in known for using his ‘lucky’ actors two or three times, for example Uma Thurman who appears in Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction, Samuel L. Jackson in Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction, Bruce Willis in Death Proof and Pulp Fiction, etc. This would be considered one of his auteur signatures. Another would be the fact that he usually includes suspenseful, unsuspected twists that the audience would never guess. There sometimes also appear to be connections between various films for example the line ‘Any time of day is a good time for pie’, said by Fabienne in Pulp Fiction is also a line in True Romance (written by Tarantino). The character played by John Travlota in Pulp Fiction (Vince Vega), appears to be the brother of Vic Vega (Mr. Blonde) from Reservoir Dogs. The Big Kahuna Burger also appears in several Tarantino movies. Mr. Tarantino also seemingly has some sort of foot fetish, as close ups of feet or scenes involving feet are used in some of his movies (Death Proof, Jackie Brown). His auteur signatures, sometimes rather disturbing, along with his twisted mind and ideas, make Tarantino one of the most influential director/producer/writer of his time.
The Pulp Fiction Briefcase is also one of the biggest ongoing cliffhangers in film history. The content of the briefcase remains unknown, although when asked about it, Quentin has replied that there is a lightbulb in the briefcase. Another one of Tarantino’s auteur signature is the use of old, somewhat forgotten songs on his films, which he manages to re-popularise. Some artists used on Tarantino soundtracks include Neil Diamond, Chuck Berry, Dick Dale, Pacific Gas & Electric and Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Titch amongst others. Tarantino has also starred in most of his films, which would be considered another auteur signature. He usually plays minor roles such as Mr. Brown in Reservoir Dogs, Jimmie Dimmick in Pulp Fiction, Warren the bartender in Death Proof, and a Crazy 88 member in Kill Bill. Controversy is another major auteur signature of Tarantino’s, as some scenes (of pulp fiction) weren’t ever shown for that reason alone. Pulp Fiction remains one of the great films of the 90’s, and Tarantino’s signature auteur formula managed to get the film a well deserved oscar.
The fact that Tarantino’s films aren’t of a specific genre, this
demonstrates a hybrid genre, which involves mixing several genres
together. In Pulp Fiction for example, the aspects of crime, thriller,
action, and mystery all intertwined into one film demonstrate aspects
of hybridity. I think that restricting yourself to one specific gentre
can cause a film to be flat, monotonous and rather boring. Therefore,
having a hybrid genre breaks the monotony and enables the film to ‘be
free’. In my opinion, the scenes of Pulp Fiction, as well as the actors
of the film fit the genre perfectly. We, as an audience, are able to
relate to the characters and watch the film with a different
perspective, without any prejudice by seeing the title or genre. The
conventions of these genres fit in with Quentin Tarantino’s style of
films and personality in general.
Both approaches
enabled me to view how the aspects of Tarantino’s signature auteur come
up in all the films he makes. Without necessarily realizing these
aspects, we see them in his productions which makes it his ‘gimmick’,
per se. However, the fact that most of his films don’t have a specific
genre (which makes them hybrid’s), enables him to do pretty much
whatever he wants without having to confine it to a specific genre.

Something is invariably wrong with anyone that does not like this film as it should've won an Oscar! To this day, people still quote lines from this movie, which spawned a new generation of hard-nosed hipsters and Samuel L. Jackson wannabes. It's important to add that Tarantino is a wizard at reviving many of Hollywood's actor, i.e. John Travolta and Bruce Willis at the time of Pulp Fiction's inception and bringing to light new ones, such as Tim Roth, who got his break while doing films for him.
What an outstanding hub, Keira7! Great job.
Tarantino is absolutely brilliant-and well done, keira7!
A really fantastic hub Keira. I've been away for a few days working on an interior design project that just came my way. Just came in briefly to visit HP (always miss this community LOL!)and was happy to see your new hub. Sounds like a great movie. I haven't had time to watch a good movie in a long long time. Only the TV stuff. Your hub has awakened the interest again. Maybe i should make it a point of duty to go out and watch a good movie once every fortnight. Actually, i think i will.
Thanks you so much for dedicating this hub to all your fans. You are really such a sweet and nice person Keira.
GodBless.
The moment I read the title, I rushed to your hub keira! I love this guy. He is the greatest director/ actor ever and his masterpiece Pulp Fiction is indeed one of the best movies.
Keira - this is a wonderful showcase of Tarantino and his work/talent. It was worth the wait and embraces the director behind the films. I'm a big fan and have watched everything he's done but for his last one. Pulp Fiction rocked and still does. The best bits included the scene where they're trying to revive Uma Thurman's character, Samuel L Jackson delivering his bible speech, and the Thurman and Travolta dance.
Great hub :)
Keira, this is wonderful! I love this movie, I even have it in my house for repeats just incase can't find something else interesting. This is a great hub really, excellent and well documented. Thank you.
Nice hub Keira. I love Tarantino and that is what drew me here. Great call on it being a hybrid genre.
Hi, Keira, I love John travolta and watch him in every film he is in. I must have watched this film at least five times! Great Hub. lol Nell

I ranked Pulp Fiction at the top of my Tarantino Movie list (http://hubpages.com/hub/Tarantino-Movies). It's my favorite movie of all time.
You are so right about the foot fetish. It's also prominent in the Kill Bill movies. I think at this point he must be just poking fun at the whole thing.
Cool one, Happy to read this.
A fantastic film a fantastic hub. My favorite quote in almost any film I have seen. Jule's quoting Ezekiel. Fabulous.
