My Grenoble
61
Grenoble is a city of approximately 150,000 inhabitants located in the South Eastern region of France, at the foot of the mighty Alps. It is in a region of Europe which comes alive during the winter months due to the extremely huge numbers of skiers and snowboarders who flock to what is regarded as the Mecca of winter sports. When I said it comes alive in the winter, I lied. In fact it never sleeps. The city itself is situated in a valley surrounded by the Alps, and with very high temperatures in the summer months and perfect skiing weather,it is the perfect destination any time year round. Grenoble`s claim to fame was the hosting of the 10th Winter Olympics in 1968.
Historically, Grenoble evolved from an old roman settlement which came to the forefront in the 1700s as the birth place of the French Revolution.
Places to visit include:
"La Bastille" which are ancient fortifications overlooking the city and only a short ride by cable car.
Chateau de Vizille - offical residence of the "dauphin".
Museum of Grenoble
Museum of St Laurent
There is also the new 20,000 seater football stadium as used by Grenoble FC.There is a large pedestrianised area in the centre of the city and on the annual "Fete de la Musique" there are huge amounts of musicians from all over the world perfoming.
Some of the notable "Grenoblois" include Stendhal (Writer), Jean Jacques Mournier (Orator of the French Revolution), Henri Fantin Latour (painter) and Cristobal Huet (NHL player). Some of the people who have lived in Grenoble include Jean Luc Godard, Jean Jacques Rousseau and Andre the Giant.
Grenoble has been twinned with numerous cities including Oxford,Phoenix and Bethlehem. The city is also famous for its walnuts and also Gratin Dauphinois which is the speciality of the area.
Being my hometown, I would advise any travellers to pass through this beautiful city in a beautiful part of the world. Be it for fine French Cuisine, seeing many notable historical monuments, or just to have a good time sipping coffee on the banks of the Isére river and watching the world go by.

Great work, Keira - your passion for the town shines through in your writing. I lived in Oxford for a few years, so I always wondered what the twin town was like!

I not a skier, but I can visit Grenoble in the summer. I had a friend in France, but now he passed away. I do not know when I will visit France. You live in a nice area there. Thanks for sharing.
Grenoble in summer its lovely, but very hot. Plus the heat stays in the middle of the city, because Grenoble is surronded by montain. The best way in summer its to go up to the montain, its beautiful. You will love it. You can let me know if you come, I will be happy to help. I really appreciate your comment, thank you very much my dear Dao Hoa. I am glad you liked my hub. Bless you my friend.:)
This really makes me want to visit your lovely hometown. I'm so envious of the wonderful heritage you've shared living in this gorgeous place with so much history and beauty. Even as a school girl I loved the sound of the language and studied 3 years of French in high school when everyone else was taking Spanish. My Gran was from Austria and one day I hope to visit her hometown. Maybe I'll take in a tour of Grenoble too! Enjoyed reading your article and hope you'll write more about the area. Very nice hub.
